There are five long Thai poems which are now reckoned to be the oldest
which have survived until today. One is about war but the four others are about love,
loss and separation from a lover, travel, and landscape. The exact dates, authors,
and even the titles are unknown. They are full of passion and beauty, and they deserve
to be better known. Prof. Pasuk Phongpaichit and Dr. Chris Baker have translated and
published all five in English.
In this talk, they will read some key passages and discuss what makes these works distinctive
and what they tell us about Siam half a millennium ago.
