Laureates of the Fukuoka Prize 2024 has been announced!!

We are proud to announce the laureate of the Fukuoka Prize 2024.
The Award Ceremony will be held on Thursday, September 26th (JST).
Also, series of Public Lectures will be held on Friday, September 27th and Saturday, September 28th. These events are free and require advance booking.
Information on how to apply for these events as well as on other events will be available in July.

● Grand Prize MANABE Daito (Media Art)
Artist who shows the potential of art by combining artistic expressions, advanced science and technology
・The Artist has launched multiple pioneering projects such as collaborating with the Japanese synth-pop group, Perfume and the augmented-reality presentation at the Flag Handover Ceremony, Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
・Manabe combines the expressions of the human body, such as song and dance, with science and technology, thus expressing these fields as a new form of art. In doing so, his work forces viewers to think about the future of art, and presents these technologies as potential form of new entertainment.
・Manabe co-founded Rhizomatiks and worked on both experimental art production and business-commissioned work. He also proved himself as a talented entrepreneur who developed numerous global projects.

● Academic Prize Sunil AMRITH (History)
Historian who practices ‘global history’ from multiple perspectives such as environment and immigration
・Based on his own self-identity, Amrith explores the common theme of an Asian history that transcends national borders; he focuses mainly on the Bay of Bengal and the surrounding South and Southeast Asian regions.
・In his recent work, Unruly Waters, he brings focuses on the relationship between humans and their natural environment. He not only describes the process of these events from environmental, economic and political perspectives, but also provides a masterful narrative on the drama of ideology.
・Amrith addresses recent crises over water, such as climate change and rising sea levels, while weaving an awareness of contemporary issues into the narrative of the historical drama to study global history.

● Arts and Culture Prize Kimsooja (Art)
Artist with an international presence with the work based on Asian culture
・The artist became internationally recognized for her work on Asian cultures in the 1990s when modern art broadened its Western-centric horizons to include more diverse cultures. She continues her ceaseless efforts and creativity to keep presenting new works.
・Besides her utilization of traditional Korean bottari wrapping cloth and her audio-visual works, she is famous for her installations that use the properties of light to display a rainbow of colors throughout spaces.
・Kimsooja participated in the Venice Biennale several times as well as in solo exhibitions at world-famous art galleries and in international exhibitions. She has also exhibited her work in museums in Japan such as the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo and the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum.
